New nose rider project

I've been working on a nose rider when time permits. It's an evolution series board that is being built under my Dirty Crows Surfboards label.

I had a fun day at the beach with my newest and youngest "team riders". My buddy Paul is a great Dad and knows how to how much Paulie and Kayla love to go for a surf. Paul has been a long time friend from my construction past. I got Paul out a few times and then the kids got involved.

Paulie and Kayla were very excited about surfing a keiki. The last time they had to share my foam fish. We all know how much siblings like to share...... humm. Anyways they were stoked and the boards were all ready for them.

It was a typical Florida day. The sky was overcast and it rained a little. The temp. was mid-80's and the water was probably about the same. The surf was pretty wild and had some size. There were some guys surfing outside and getting large choppy waves. The inside was reforming pretty good.

The first hour and half Paul and I helped out the kids by pushing them for a start. The last hour and half the kids were getting their own waves and paddling out. There was a lot of rip current running so Paul and I stayed in the water with them. The session ended with a couple wore out kids that didn't want to get out the water. Hmm.. sound familiar.

We stopped at a Mexican restaurant on the way home. That's been one of my rituals since I started surfing. It was a lot of fun for all. Seeing the kids getting stoked gave me some stoke too.

Evolution Nose Rider Project

I've been looking forward to building and surfing this one. What I'm planning is to use the noserider spar with the evolution features. That includes the tapered rails, nose concave, belly bottom, vee tail and glass-on pivot fin.

There are several builders that are starting evo boards so, I want to be the first to build the nose rider version. BTW- The evo with the standard longboard spar can be nose ridden. I found that out during my last session.

Favorite places

My favorite place right now is Ormond Beach. We had a beautiful day of sun and surf. I enjoyed a morning session with Fred. I had a fun session. The set waves were good size for here. That'd be like 2'. I got lots of waves and then the tide dropped. It sucked all the power out of the swell. I had to laugh because it'd start to suck and wham a sneaker set would catch me napping. The water was toasty 82. The sun was blazing a fine Florida beach day.

I'm very comfortable with this board now. It's such an easy board to surf and catch waves on. It's easy to control and doesn't require a lot of effort to turn or drop-in. By far the most user friendly board I've ever designed and built.

Evolution Board Patterns and Templates

I've tested the board enough to know it's a good board. I'm very pleased with the way it feels and handles. The patterns and templates for the ribs, spar, nose and tail pieces are available. I also have patterns for the nose concave and construction details on how to do the rails. Also included are the patterns for a 10" pivot fin and the nose rider spar.

This project requires a lot more precision that the standard longboard kit. Experience with HWS construction is a big plus.

It's too choppy and sloppy right now. It's suppose to clean up by the weekend.

The Evolution board is completely done. All it needs now are wax and waves. I'm loving the feel of these rails.

Clear Coated

I shot clear coat on the top today. Tomorrow the bottom gets done. Then I'll be done. I'm really looking forward to surfing this one as soon as we get some waves.

Finishing up

This board is almost done. I'm happy with the way it's turning out. The rails, bottom, tail and fin worked out pretty much as planned. All that's needed is wet sanding and clear coat. It should be fun testing this one.

There are several individuals that inspired me to design and build this new board.

I kept drawing rail profiles and thinking about one of my old longboards that had tapered rails. The rail shape I settled on is a leap of faith for me. The rest of the board is the same outline and rocker configuration as boards I've done in the past. This board will also have more roll in the bottom, vee in the tail and concave in the nose.
