7' Funfish comes to life.

This board is a copy of one of my favorites.  It's going to be mostly balsa with some cedar.  The idea is to keep it light.  The frame is luan and cedar.  It's great to work with balsa.  The cedar is good too.

It's over before you know it.

There is one thing that can be said about the waves here in central Florida, its over in a matter of moments most of the time.  To have any chance for a ride on these short period waves, the rider needs the right board.  When I first started surfing the Florida east coast.  I used a Ron Jon 7' funboard.  It actually worked alright, if the tide was kinda high and there wasn't much chop.  If it was low tide.  The conditions were much more challenging for that board.

Well experience has taught me a few things about finding that small window of good waves.  Because the sandbars seem to be constantly changing.  It makes the waves fairly tide sensitive.  Another words, you got to be there when there is the right amount of water and swell hitting the bar.  That means lots of surf checks and knowing the tidal conditions.  For me having a board that can handle a variety of conditions is pretty important.

The weekend crowd usually confirm my thoughts about having the right board for the local conditions.  When there's a swell on a weekend, there are usually guys in the line up with longboards.  Most of the time these guys see a set wave and start to paddle for it.  Then they realize that it's going to be a pretty steep drop and a long wall, so they back out.  I love to jump on these because I know my board is fast enough and has enough fins to handle that kind of wave.  Anyways, this why my current build is a 7' fish.  It's a copy of one of my favorite boards.  More details to follow.

Bringing it back.

It's been awhile since I've felt like building another wood surfboard.  I think it's about time that I get started again.  I'll be working on a couple ideas I have for new boards in 2014.  All will be hollow construction made of cedar and balsa.  They will be boards that are designed to be surfed in the conditions and waves we have here in Ormond Beach, FL  Another words boards will be built and tested for local beach break conditions.  I'm excited to get started again doing what I love.  Several friends and associates have advised me to bring back the Woody Logic name.  That's my intentions.  Thanks for your support.

New nose rider project

I've been working on a nose rider when time permits. It's an evolution series board that is being built under my Dirty Crows Surfboards label.

Kids on Keikis.

I had a fun day at the beach with my newest and youngest "team riders". My buddy Paul is a great Dad and knows how to how much Paulie and Kayla love to go for a surf. Paul has been a long time friend from my construction past. I got Paul out a few times and then the kids got involved.

Paulie and Kayla were very excited about surfing a keiki. The last time they had to share my foam fish. We all know how much siblings like to share...... humm. Anyways they were stoked and the boards were all ready for them.

It was a typical Florida day. The sky was overcast and it rained a little. The temp. was mid-80's and the water was probably about the same. The surf was pretty wild and had some size. There were some guys surfing outside and getting large choppy waves. The inside was reforming pretty good.

The first hour and half Paul and I helped out the kids by pushing them for a start. The last hour and half the kids were getting their own waves and paddling out. There was a lot of rip current running so Paul and I stayed in the water with them. The session ended with a couple wore out kids that didn't want to get out the water. Hmm.. sound familiar.

We stopped at a Mexican restaurant on the way home. That's been one of my rituals since I started surfing. It was a lot of fun for all. Seeing the kids getting stoked gave me some stoke too.

Evolution Nose Rider Project

I've been looking forward to building and surfing this one. What I'm planning is to use the noserider spar with the evolution features. That includes the tapered rails, nose concave, belly bottom, vee tail and glass-on pivot fin.

There are several builders that are starting evo boards so, I want to be the first to build the nose rider version. BTW- The evo with the standard longboard spar can be nose ridden. I found that out during my last session.

If you're interested in the off-sets for the noserider spar template.

Favorite places

My favorite place right now is Ormond Beach. We had a beautiful day of sun and surf. I enjoyed a morning session with Fred. I had a fun session. The set waves were good size for here. That'd be like 2'. I got lots of waves and then the tide dropped. It sucked all the power out of the swell. I had to laugh because it'd start to suck and wham a sneaker set would catch me napping. The water was toasty 82. The sun was blazing a fine Florida beach day.

I'm very comfortable with this board now. It's such an easy board to surf and catch waves on. It's easy to control and doesn't require a lot of effort to turn or drop-in. By far the most user friendly board I've ever designed and built.
